Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has issued a public call for the country to hold wartime elections. This statement represents the most significant political challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since the start of the full-scale conflict with Russia over four years ago. Fedorov posted a video on YouTube stating that democracy cannot remain a hostage to the war. He argues that the nation must establish a legal and safe mechanism to restart its democratic process despite the ongoing security situation.
Fedorov served as defense minister for six months before his sudden dismissal last month. His removal triggered protests in Kyiv and other major cities as supporters rallied against the decision. The 35-year-old was a central figure in Ukraine’s efforts to modernize its military, specifically regarding drone warfare and anti-corruption initiatives. Many observers view his recent comments as a direct pushback against the current administration after his departure from office.
Zelenskyy has moved to replace him, recently asking parliament to confirm Yevhen Khmara as the new defense minister. This move effectively ends speculation regarding a potential return for Fedorov. In his video message, Fedorov noted that Ukraine is experiencing a systemic crisis of governance and highlighted how corruption impacts the effectiveness of the war effort. He stopped short of naming specific officials.
As of now, the office of the President has not provided a formal response to the video statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently reviewing the situation. The call for elections remains a sensitive topic in Ukraine, as national law currently prohibits such proceedings during periods of martial law. The political climate remains tense as the government navigates these internal pressures while managing the ongoing conflict.
