Officials closed the country's airspace minutes later, grounding all scheduled arrivals and departures to protect the presidential plane from potential collision or interference. The move delayed the flight as military officials monitored the trajectory of the encroaching threat.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed the gravity of the situation the following day. Støre told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK that the aircraft came remarkably close to a mid-air collision during its takeoff sequence. The incident highlights the persistent risks facing the Ukrainian leader as he moves across Eastern Europe for high-level diplomatic meetings. Security protocols typically shield his transit, yet the presence of this drone suggests those protections are constantly tested by Russian military activity.

Despite the deployment of these aircraft, they did not intercept the drone, which remained in Romanian skies for nearly half an hour. Radar contact vanished at 5:02 pm, leaving military planners to determine its final destination.

Only five minutes after contact was lost, radar systems detected the craft returning to Moldovan territory. It traveled further east before crashing in the Râșcani district near Mihăilenii Vechi. The explosion occurred roughly 160 kilometers away from the airport, finally clearing the path for the presidential flight to depart at 5:57 pm. This specific event adds to the growing list of aerial incursions near the border between NATO states and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It underscores how the geographic proximity of these nations puts civilian transit at constant risk from wayward or deliberate military hardware.

Intelligence reports identify the craft as a Geran-4, which represents a move away from the slow-moving propeller drones Russia used during the initial stages of the conflict. The Geran-4 possesses a wingspan of three meters and can reach speeds of 500 kilometers per hour. It carries a heavy warhead, making it more akin to a low-cost cruise missile than a traditional scouting tool.

Russia is relying on these jet-powered assets to pressure Ukraine's air defense networks. These systems must now account for high-speed targets alongside traditional ballistic missiles.
