Zelenskyy replaces Ukraine military chief after protests
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially replaced the country's military commander-in-chief. Oleksandr Syrskii has been removed from his position, with Mykhailo Drapatyi appointed to take control of the military operations. This decision follows six days of public demonstrations in Kyiv, which began after the earlier dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Fedorov had previously engaged in public conflict with Syrskii regarding the direction of the war effort. While Fedorov championed drone technology and rapid modernization, Syrskii maintained a more traditional approach to command. Fedorov accused the outgoing commander of blocking essential reforms. Zelenskyy stated that the leadership change is intended to reset the defense strategy against Russian forces and improve front-line management.
Zelenskyy has offered Fedorov a new government role focused on the national technology sector, though his acceptance remains unconfirmed. The presidential administration aims to address ongoing issues with mobilization and military strategy as the conflict continues. Despite these internal shifts, Kremlin officials have stated that they do not anticipate changes to the current front-line situation.
These personnel changes occur amid a period of rising civilian casualties. The UN reported a significant increase in deaths and injuries within Ukraine during the first half of 2026. Both nations continue to exchange air strikes targeting critical infrastructure, while peace talks remain stalled. Mykhailo Drapatyi, the new commander, is known for his defensive work in the Kharkiv region and his previous leadership during efforts to stop Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.
