When I first founded Bewdy, my goal was straightforward. I wanted to build a platform that connected customers with beauty professionals. I viewed it as a discovery problem where better technology would naturally lead to more successful bookings. I assumed that if the product worked well enough, the business would thrive on its own. This is a common trap for many founders. We often focus on the immediate transaction rather than the long-term needs of the people using our tools.
My perspective shifted after spending time listening to the actual professionals on our platform. They rarely spoke about the difficulty of finding new customers or the booking process. Instead, they shared stories about the reality of running a small business. They talked about managing staff, keeping records, securing payments, and finding reliable suppliers. It became clear that they were not just service providers. They were entrepreneurs managing complex operations with limited support. Booking appointments was just the surface of a much deeper need for operational stability.
A conversation with Babatunde Akin Moses of Sycamore marked a turning point. When I described Bewdy as a booking platform, he challenged me by saying that I was actually building an ecosystem. That realization changed how I view our mission today. I stopped looking at our work as a series of transactions and started seeing it as the creation of industry infrastructure. Products solve specific, isolated problems, but infrastructure provides the foundation for entire industries to grow and formalize.
Today, we are focused on creating the systems that allow beauty businesses in Nigeria to operate effectively. This means moving beyond the booking app model to build tools that help these entrepreneurs manage their growth, train apprentices, and contribute more to the local economy. We are no longer chasing the number of appointments processed. We are measuring our success by how much stronger these businesses become because of the tools we provide. Every industry changes when the infrastructure surrounding it catches up to the ambition of the people within it. By building these systems, we enable beauty professionals to scale their impact and secure their future.
