Sixteen years ago, Ezra and Ivan Burger were young brothers navigating life-saving heart transplants. Today, at 18 and 13, these Madison brothers are looking toward the future with a new goal: launching their own business, Brave Hearts Gourmet Popcorn.
Born with a rare genetic disorder called mitochondrial disease, both brothers have faced a lifetime of complex medical challenges. Their parents, Annie and Leo, oversee roughly 200 medical appointments each year. Because their health remains unpredictable, traditional employment presents significant obstacles. The family views entrepreneurship as a practical solution, offering the flexibility required to work during their strongest days while resting when necessary.
Leo and Annie, who have operated a Madison hair salon for two decades, believe the popcorn business offers more than just income. Their plan involves retrofitting a used shuttle bus to accommodate Ivan, who relies on a wheelchair. This mobile kitchen would allow the brothers to serve popcorn at local markets, community festivals, and sporting events across south-central Wisconsin.
Beyond building a career, the family hopes this project provides a sense of purpose and fosters independence.
