Sherman Standberry grew up watching his father operate an accounting practice in Atlanta. While he initially pursued a different path by launching a digital marketing firm called Lyfe Marketing, his accounting roots remained a primary focus. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in the field and obtained his CPA license before eventually returning to the industry.
In 2022, Sherman and his wife Krystal founded My CPA Coach. The firm focuses on strategic tax planning and advisory services rather than standard tax filing. This shift proved successful, as the company reported $3.2 million in revenue last year. Standberry credits the firm's growth to the integration of his marketing background with financial services. By producing educational content, they reached nearly 300,000 subscribers, allowing them to attract and convert small business owners and investors into long-term clients.
With a team of 15 employees, including six CPAs, the firm highlights the demand for advisory-based accounting models. Standberry notes that tax strategy provides high value to their clients, often saving them more than $50,000 annually. He balances this work with his original marketing agency, which continues to operate.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Standberry views the accounting industry as a stable sector that remains relevant during economic shifts. He learned the value of self-employment from his father and now applies those lessons to scale a modern firm. With two children of his own, the family's history in the industry may continue for another generation.
