The University of Wisconsin-Madison is making a clear push to become the top public university for student founders. During the recent End of Summer Tech and Entrepreneurship Celebration, the university highlighted several new student-led ventures that use artificial intelligence to solve practical problems. Projects ranged from health management platforms to tools for medical training and academic support.
Elena Motonishi, a student at UW-Madison, presented Lobelia, an AI platform designed to help patients manage asthma by providing risk assessments based on personal and environmental data. Other featured projects included Verity.ai, a tool that corrects student chemistry and math work in real time, and VeinSight, which uses AI to assist clinicians in locating veins for IV procedures. These ventures signal a shift toward applied technology coming directly from the campus research environment.
This event also marked the start of Forward Fest and served as a showcase for the Wisconsin Entrepreneurship Hub and the UW Tech Exploration Lab. Cecily Brose, an innovation specialist at the hub, noted that the university aims to reduce fragmentation by aligning resources across all departments. The objective is to create a unified pipeline that connects students, researchers, and alumni with venture capital and industry partners. By focusing on a problem-first approach, the university intends to move research out of the lab and into the market more effectively.
Sandra Bradley, director of the UW Tech Exploration Lab, emphasized that their work focuses on multidisciplinary teams tackling specific industry challenges. With over 400 students and 100 mentors currently involved, the lab operates through specialized tracks that guide students from initial concepts to working prototypes. The university plans to host additional events this fall, including weekly office hours and a 30-hour innovation event called BuildFest, to keep the momentum going for campus founders.
