The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has officially deemed Phil Baniewicz, the former president of Bishop Miege High School, unsuitable for any ecclesiastical employment or volunteer service. This decision follows a comprehensive independent investigation into Baniewicz that spanned over a year and covered allegations dating back to 1985. The investigation process included interviews with 68 individuals and an analysis of reports regarding his conduct during his time in various youth ministry and leadership positions.
Archbishop Shawn McKnight emphasized that the move is part of a responsibility to protect minors and vulnerable individuals. The inquiry found a consistent pattern of imprudent professional conduct and repeated failures to maintain necessary boundaries with minors. According to the archdiocese, the accounts provided by those interviewed showed substantial consistency regarding his professional behavior.
Baniewicz was placed on administrative leave in June 2025 and was subsequently dismissed from his role at the high school later that year. While no criminal charges have been filed against him at this time, the current safety plan remains in place, which prohibits him from contacting those who have brought forward accusations or who may serve as witnesses. The archdiocese continues to encourage anyone with information regarding misconduct within the church to contact authorities or use their dedicated reporting channels.
