County Board Approves Highway Engineer Employment Agreement

The Bond County Board finalized an employment agreement with Highway Engineer Michael McCormick during their recent session. This contract establishes new salary terms for the position, which has operated with an annual pay of $118,000 based on previous Illinois Department of Transportation recommendations.

Under the terms approved by a 4-0 vote, McCormick will receive a salary increase of at least $10,000 above the state-recommended figure, starting August 19. These payments are sourced from motor fuel tax funds and federal matching grants, meaning the agreement involves no direct cost to the county budget. The board members highlighted the importance of securing these funds to ensure the department remains stable for the duration of the current term.

In addition to the pay adjustment, the agreement grants McCormick use of a county-owned vehicle for work-related transit. It also contains a specific severance provision, which guarantees six months of base salary should the county terminate his employment without cause. These terms remain in effect through August 18, 2030, covering the remainder of his six-year appointment that began in 2024.

Board members expressed satisfaction with the current department performance. Member Jacob Rayl noted the positive impact of the work completed by the engineer and his office. The board expects to discuss further salary updates during their upcoming August meeting to align with the latest state guidance.
