The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County launched a specialized program to help residents navigate the complexities of estate planning and probate at no cost to the participant.
Many families face legal obstacles after a homeowner passes away. Even when relatives continue to pay property taxes and maintain the residence, they often fail to formally transfer the title. This situation creates a tangled title that prevents families from selling the home, leveraging equity, or securing necessary financial relief during emergencies. Without a clear title, homeowners are often disqualified from critical disaster assistance following natural events like hurricanes.
The Heirs' Property Project provides legal assistance to ensure these titles are cleared and that proper estate documents are in place. The services provided include drafting a Last Will and Testament, creating a power of attorney, and establishing a designation of health care surrogate. These services are typically valued between $3,000 and $5,000 when handled through private firms.
Eligibility for this program is not based on income, though applicants must own a home within Palm Beach County. The initiative is funded by a $1 million grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta and Palm Beach County. Officials note that they have the capacity to assist approximately 150 more families before the funding expires at the end of September. Interested parties should submit their applications by September 1 to allow sufficient time for attorneys to complete the required legal work.
