Transportation design student Love Björklund presents a new vision for rural Scandinavia. His thesis project, the ANURA, addresses a growing gap between modern, highly automated vehicles and the practical needs of people living in remote areas. While current car manufacturers push for digital connectivity and software-locked services, this concept prioritizes mechanical accessibility and user repair.

Björklund argues that rural populations possess a long tradition of self-reliance. When conditions become harsh, these residents do not have the luxury of waiting for authorized service technicians. Modern vehicles with flush door handles that freeze shut or proprietary software barriers often fail in these environments. The ANURA project shifts the focus toward a machine that trusts its owner.

Designed for 2040, the vehicle features modular components. Headlights double as portable lanterns, running boards act as traction aids or loading ramps, and external handles double as pulley mounts. Each element serves multiple functions, reducing the need for specialized parts and allowing owners to keep the vehicle running under difficult conditions.

The project underscores a disconnect in the current automotive industry. As cars move toward automated, closed-loop systems, the need for robust, serviceable, and adaptable machines in rugged landscapes remains ignored. By reintroducing simplicity and manual agency, Björklund proposes a future where technology works for the user rather than forcing the user to rely on a central service infrastructure.
