Origins of the DTILE System
Industrial designers Arnout Visser, Erik Jan Kwakkel, and Peter van der Jagt started with a simple observation. In professional design education, students learn that the intersection between two surfaces defines the quality of a space. Standard tile systems often fail to bridge these gaps effectively, forcing designers to rely on caulk, messy grout lines, or unfinished edges. The trio sought to remove these limitations by developing a ceramic system capable of wrapping around corners and curves.
Working from the Netherlands, the designers moved past the flat, two-dimensional nature of standard construction materials. They treated the tile not as a finishing layer but as a structural component that could fold into a room. This shift allows for continuous surfaces that maintain a consistent aesthetic across floors, walls, and furniture. By controlling the production process themselves, they ensured that every curve and corner piece fits together without compromise. They conceived the core concept during the 1990s, long before the current market for flexible surfacing took hold.
Technical Capabilities and Utility
The DTILE system expands beyond aesthetic corner pieces by integrating functional hardware directly into the tiling grid. A tiled wall often sits stagnant, serving only as a barrier or a decoration. This system transforms such surfaces into active components. Designers can integrate hooks, shelves, drawers, and even electrical outlets directly into the modular grid. These utility pieces match the finish and thickness of the standard tiles, creating a uniform appearance that hides the underlying hardware.
Ventilation covers and functional cutouts also become part of the design. By standardizing these components, the inventors created a method to avoid the visual clutter typically associated with wall-mounted accessories. The result is a room that feels like it grew out of the tile itself. It is a departure from traditional interior construction methods where plumbing or electrical fixtures are installed after the tiling is complete. Market Impact and Future Outlook
Transitioning from a design exercise to a commercial product required significant persistence. The team launched their brand officially in 2010. They opted for in-house manufacturing to maintain control over the specific geometry of the rounded edges and modular connectors. This decision allowed them to scale their operations while preserving the original vision of the founders. Today, the products reach clients in more than 50 countries.
Architects and interior designers now use these tiles for projects that require unconventional geometries. The ability to wrap a staircase or create a seamless kitchen island out of ceramic changes the vocabulary of modern interior design. As construction costs for custom carpentry rise, prefabricated systems that provide a high-end look through modular assembly represent a significant shift in the industry.
