A massive 180-foot statue of the Virgin Mary is now the tallest of its kind in Europe. Located in the small village of Konotopie, Poland, the structure stands at 55.6 meters, including its 15-meter crown-shaped pedestal. This height places it above the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, which measures 38 meters tall.
The project was commissioned by Polish billionaire Roman Karkosik and his wife, Grażyna. The Karkosiks are prominent investors on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and live in a nearby estate. They stated the monument serves as an expression of gratitude following a personal health challenge faced by Roman Karkosik.
While the Catholic Church maintains significant influence in rural Poland, the inauguration occurs during a period of shifting religious demographics. Younger generations and urban populations in the country report lower levels of religious attachment compared to older cohorts. Despite these trends, the monument stands as a notable engineering feat and a major regional landmark.
Local authorities anticipate that the statue will attract both religious pilgrims and general tourists. The pedestal contains an integrated viewing platform designed to accommodate visitors looking for a vantage point over the central Polish landscape. The village of Konotopie, which previously had a population of fewer than 150 residents, now hosts this significant new fixture on the European map.
