Rethinking Industrial Space in Hangzhou

Vertical manufacturing is shifting from a theoretical concept to a physical requirement for modern cities. The Greentown ThinkWorks project in Hangzhou's Zijingang Science and Technology City represents a departure from traditional industrial building design. Completed in 2026, this project serves as a test case for how high-density environments can house manufacturing while maintaining a human-centric focus. The project covers a total area of 75,859 square meters, requiring a design that addresses the tension between industrial output and urban life.

The architects at LYCS Architecture and GLA Architects focused on breaking the monolithic appearance common to industrial sites. Instead of a single enclosed block, the design organizes the facility as an open platform. This strategy allows the building to function as an extension of the surrounding urban fabric. By integrating natural light and accessible communal spaces, the team shifted the design priority from pure volume to accessibility and environmental connection.

Design Strategies for Vertical Density

The project utilizes a podium and tower structure to manage its density. This setup separates industrial processes while allowing for distinct zones for different types of work. A core element of this approach is the creation of an inner courtyard that acts as a central hub. This courtyard provides a shared space for workers, moving away from the isolated feel of older manufacturing plants. Natural light reaches deeper into the building footprint because of this arrangement. It also helps manage the visual impact of the tower, making it feel less like a closed industrial container.

Material choices play a critical role in the building's aesthetic. The facade features a mix of glass and structural elements that highlight the building's internal logic. Architects designed these sections to allow for better ventilation and light penetration. By staggering roofs and using setbacks, the building avoids the bulky massing typical of mid-sized industrial centers. Each floor reflects a specific approach to light and human movement. This is a direct response to the increasing demand for high-density, high-quality industrial workspace in China's rapidly developing tech hubs.

Balancing Technology and Human Needs

The integration of nature is a deliberate design choice rather than an aesthetic add-on. The ground floor strategy pulls the surrounding environment inward, encouraging movement between the building and the street. Green spaces act as a buffer, ensuring the site feels integrated with the Zijingang Science and Technology City context. This reflects a broader trend in architecture where industrial architecture must also cater to the mental well-being of the workforce. The design team included Ruan Hao, Zhan Yuan, Zhao Lin, Zhang Yunyi, Duan Qin, Yuan Ran, and Zhang Jingyi to ensure the operational needs of the facility were met.

GLA Architects managed the structure and MEP systems to ensure the facility meets the technical requirements of high-end manufacturing. Song Ping, Wang Yuan, and Jin Zhangjiang led the architectural team, while Wang Hongtao oversaw structural integrity. Fan Chenhui, Chen Lihong, and Li Chunjiao coordinated the complex mechanical and electrical systems. This cooperation between design and technical teams confirms that vertical factories can function efficiently without sacrificing architectural quality. The project points to a future where industrial hubs are part of the civic identity of a city rather than detached, hidden zones on the urban outskirts.
