Industrial designer HoHyeon Lim has introduced a new desk clock that challenges traditional form factors. Known as the Edge Clock, this design rests on the corner of a surface rather than sitting flat like standard timepieces.
Lim developed the clock to test how objects occupy space. By placing the weight and core function at the edge, the piece acts as a physical anchor for a desk. The design relies on the geometry of corners to maintain balance and stability. It is a departure from conventional clock shapes that prioritize a centered, horizontal base.
The clock is a hollow structure, which allows users to add their own ballast to adjust the weight. This feature provides a sense of control over how the object feels and sits on a surface. While the design is visually striking, it remains a concept piece for now, serving as a study in spatial interaction rather than a commercial product.
Industrial design often looks for ways to integrate everyday objects into our environment more effectively. Lim’s project illustrates how a simple shift in orientation can change the relationship between a functional tool and the space it occupies. It is an exercise in minimalism that highlights the potential for new forms in static objects.
