José Santos captures Portuguese life in paintings at Portugalia

Artist José Santos is currently showing a collection of 16 realistic portraits at Portugalia Marketplace in Fall River. Titled Vozes Portuguesas, or Portuguese Voices, this exhibition displays work created throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. These pieces focus on members of the Portuguese-American community, offering a look at personal and cultural identity during that era.

Santos painted these works while he was deeply focused on questions of heritage and representation. He spent his early career working in photography labs where he learned to retouch and airbrush by hand. This technical background shows in the precision and realism found in the portraits. The collection aims to be relatable, with figures that reflect the everyday lives of families and friends within the community.
