Spanish studio NUA Arquitectures has completed a project in El Pont d'Armentera that transforms an old textile warehouse into a contemporary office space. The building sits in a region that was once a major textile hub in southern Catalonia but has since seen most of its industrial heritage disappear.
To preserve this history, the architects chose a strategy of adaptive reuse. They kept the existing concrete and brick structure of the warehouse while inserting a new office block built entirely from timber. This design creates the effect of a building within a building, offering two levels of office and meeting areas tucked neatly inside the old factory walls.
The site also features a new communal paved plaza designed for gathering and resting. This outdoor area is sheltered by a concrete and steel canopy and is intended to serve as a central node for the complex. A path paved with terracotta connects the plaza to the office interiors, guiding people through the space.
The project incorporates sustainable elements, including the use of recycled stone from the site and high-performance insulation on the walls of the original structure. New openings and skylights have been added to bring light into the workspace, while the offices themselves extend outward into a single-storey volume that houses dining and kitchen areas. NUA Arquitectures aims to balance industrial memory with the requirements of modern workspace design.
