Jim Carrey Saddened By Death of 'The Mask' Director Chuck Russell

Jim Carrey is mourning the loss of Chuck Russell, the director behind the 1994 film The Mask. Russell passed away unexpectedly at his home near San Diego this past Wednesday at the age of 74. Emergency services were called to his residence for a medical emergency.

Carrey spoke about the professional connection he shared with Russell during the production of the movie. He noted that Russell created an environment of camaraderie and wonder on set, which allowed the cast and crew to perform at their best. Carrey stated that he considers The Mask to be a significant part of his creative career and credited Russell for his role in that success.

Russell had a career in film that spanned several decades. After graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he went on to direct films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the 1988 version of The Blob. He also worked with Industrial Light and Magic to implement digital technology in filmmaking, which led to an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects for his work on The Mask.

Outside of his directorial contributions, Russell wrote and produced numerous projects. His final film work was a 2024 remake of the horror movie Witchboard. He leaves behind his wife of 19 years, Ania, his three children, and his sister. His career remains a notable chapter in 1990s cinema history.
