Julie Andrews will not appear in the upcoming installment of The Princess Diaries. The 90-year-old actor confirmed she declined multiple offers from the production team to return to her role as Queen Clarisse.
Andrews stated she views herself as retired from on-screen acting. She described her time with the franchise as a wonderful experience but noted the story can stand on its own without her character. Despite her absence, the third movie remains in development with Anne Hathaway set to reprise her lead role as Mia Thermopolis.
Although she has stepped away from film acting, Andrews continues to work in voice-over projects. Her recent credits include work in the Minions franchise and narration for the Netflix series Bridgerton. She maintains these roles as a way to stay active, noting that she performs them primarily to keep her brain sharp.
Director Adele Lim is currently overseeing the project for Disney. The film is still in the early stages with the production schedule and release date yet to be determined. Hathaway has previously mentioned that the script has moved in a positive direction, following an earlier reboot of the creative approach.
