Dame Julie Andrews has officially announced her retirement from screen acting. The legendary star of The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins confirmed she will not appear in the upcoming Princess Diaries 3.
At 90 years old, Andrews stated that she is retired from film roles. While producers approached her about reprising her character Queen Clarisse, she turned down the offer. She noted that she had a wonderful run and felt the new installment in the franchise would flourish without her presence.
Andrews has shifted her focus to voiceover work over the last two decades. Her contributions include roles in the Shrek and Despicable Me franchises as well as the voice of Lady Whistledown in the Netflix series Bridgerton. Her career spans eight decades and includes an Academy Award and multiple Golden Globes.
The Princess Diaries 3 remains in production with Anne Hathaway expected to lead the film. The project experienced delays as Hathaway balanced other commitments, including the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 earlier this year. Director Adele Lim is now attached to the project, which continues the story of the kingdom of Genovia.
