Harry Potter fans have successfully pressured an energy company to reroute a $581 million international cable project in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The Greenlink interconnector, designed to transport renewable energy between the UK and Ireland, was originally slated to pass directly through the beachside memorial dedicated to the character Dobby.
The memorial serves as a major site for fans who travel internationally to pay respects to the fictional house elf. Project manager Simon Ludlam initially expressed confusion regarding the public outcry, but after receiving hundreds of calls, the company agreed to adjust the route to avoid disturbing the site. The decision preserves a location that attracts significant tourism to the Welsh coast.
While the memorial remains intact, the new path for the power cable now approaches a separate area identified as a potential Bronze Age burial site. Local authorities have noted archaeological findings, including pottery fragments that date back nearly 3,500 years, in the vicinity of the rerouted plan.
Local stakeholders emphasize the economic importance of the memorial. Pembrokeshire tourism generates approximately $815 million annually and accounts for nearly a quarter of all local jobs. By keeping the site accessible to global travelers, the community retains a key feature that supports regional business revenue.
