The metal band Demon Hunter is taking legal action against Netflix over the title of its hit film KPop Demon Hunters. The band claims the streaming service's use of the name causes significant confusion for consumers who follow their work.
Hyde Lane, the company representing the band, filed the lawsuit this Tuesday. The filing argues that the band has spent twenty-five years building a brand in the music industry, and the popularity of the film now interferes with their commercial operations. They point to instances where fans purchased concert tickets for the band while expecting the animated movie project, only to be disappointed.
The complaint highlights that the name overlap extends beyond music into merchandise and live events. The band registered their trademark for recorded music and merchandise in 2022, while Netflix has filed its own registrations for the film title across various categories.
Netflix saw major success with the film, which was originally produced by Sony Pictures. Following its release on the streaming platform in 2025, it became one of the most-watched original films in the service's history. A sequel is currently in development, and the brand is looking at further expansions including a stage production.
Demon Hunter is now seeking a court order to prevent Netflix from using the name for any further music, live performance, or merchandise ventures. They are also requesting unspecified damages for the ongoing confusion caused by the competing title.
