Celine Dion recently spoke about her long health journey regarding stiff-person syndrome. She experienced symptoms of this rare neurological disorder for seventeen years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. For much of that time, she hid the extent of her physical struggles while attributing canceled tour dates to common illnesses like sinus infections.
In a recent interview, the singer described the difficulty of managing debilitating pain and muscle rigidity. At her lowest points, the condition made walking difficult and forced her to rely on heavy medication to maintain daily function. She noted that her symptoms reached a critical level around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. This period eventually led to the cancellation of her remaining world tour dates in 2023 and 2024.
Dion chose to document these events to be honest with the audience that supported her career. She compared her experience to a tree losing its leaves, noting that while she initially felt she had no fruit to offer her fans, she eventually recognized that her supporters valued her presence regardless of her ability to perform. The singer is now engaged in a physical regimen that includes regular Pilates and ballet to prepare for a five-week residency in Paris this September.
Her return to the stage follows limited public appearances, including a performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Dion stated that she is now moving away from questioning the reasons behind her condition and is instead focusing on her recovery. She characterized this new chapter as a direct effort to live her life fully despite the physical challenges she continues to navigate.
