Fontaines D.C. have officially announced their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber. The record is set for release on October 16 through XL. To mark the announcement, the Irish band shared their lead single, Marianne, along with a music video directed by Dave Meyers.
This new project follows their 2024 platinum-certified album Romance. While Romance focused on a blend of human emotion and automated themes, singer Grian Chatten notes that the upcoming record takes a different approach. Chatten spent time in Venice, Vienna, and Sicily to find inspiration, ultimately deciding to reject themes of hope in favor of a more honest reflection on modern ugliness.
Chatten describes the album as a catastrophic warning. The song Marianne draws influence from the 2024 thriller series Ripley and centers on themes of escapism. The band plans to continue questioning the pursuit of pleasure in a world that feels increasingly dark.
Production on the album was handled by James Ford. Despite the mainstream success Fontaines D.C. reached with their previous work, including tracks like Favourite and Starburster, the band remains committed to a sound that reflects the current reality rather than aiming for commercial appeal.
