Wolves in the Throne Room will release their eighth studio album, Estuary, on October 23rd via Relapse Records. The band shared the lead single, Ghosts Among the Obelisks, to announce the project.
This track reflects a shift in the band's sound toward a more concentrated approach. While the band is often noted for atmospheric compositions, this song leans on precise drum work and mid-tempo double bass. It maintains a heavy, doom-inspired tone that prioritizes mood over traditional song structures.
Guitarist and singer Nathan Weaver describes the album as a work of science fiction set one thousand years after civilization ends. The story follows survivors moving through a landscape filled with ruins and portals, where post-apocalyptic religion and nature have reclaimed the world. Weaver notes that the estuaries in this future serve as nexus points for magic and spiritual forces.
The upcoming release includes six tracks, including Knights of Tiamat and Wretched Spirits, Land of Light. Fans can listen to the new single now to get a sense of the record's direction.
