Disney has confirmed that a Kingdom Hearts anime series is currently in development for Disney+ and Disney Channel. This adaptation marks a new chapter for the popular Square Enix video game franchise, which has sold more than 39 million units since its debut in 2002.
The project is being produced in direct partnership with Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the video game series, and Square Enix. Disney aims to blend the familiar elements of the franchise with a new story that expands the existing world while honoring the characters that fans recognize.
This announcement occurred during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the recent D23 fan event. While specific plot points are not public, the initial promotional material features the protagonist Sora and his signature weapon, the Keyblade. This series is now part of an expanding slate of animated projects for the platform, including other upcoming titles.
Kingdom Hearts IV is also moving forward with a scheduled release in late 2027. Fans can expect to see more updates as development progresses on both the anime adaptation and the next installment in the game series.
