‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3 Is ‘the Season We’ve Been Building To’

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is gearing up for its third season with a major shift in the narrative timeline. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that five years have passed since the events of season two. This new chapter positions Sauron as a growing threat who is actively consolidating his power by recruiting armies from across Middle-earth and distributing the nine rings to men. The creative team noted that this season serves as the culmination of the story they set out to tell from the beginning.

Production details indicate a deep commitment to Tolkien’s source material. Fans can expect to see locations like the Dark Tower of Barad-dûr and an early version of Rivendell, which production designer Kristian Milsted modeled after Tolkien’s own watercolor illustrations and geographic inspiration in Switzerland. These settings provide the backdrop for a war that is pulling in neutral factions like the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm.

Character development remains a priority for the upcoming season. Daniel Weyman shared that his character, now identified as Gandalf, has spent the time jump learning under Tom Bombadil. He describes this version of the wizard as a figure who has arrived at his true power and understands that his influence depends on more than just magical displays. He is now focused on the impact of soft power and connecting with others as the darkness spreads.

Perhaps the most unexpected development involves the Balrog. The showrunners plan to introduce the creature as an intelligent, speaking character rather than a mindless beast. Simon Pegg will provide the voice for the Balrog, who is slated to interact with Sauron. Payne hinted that the two will meet as Sauron explores dark magic to forge the One Ring. The season premieres on November 11 on Prime Video.
