‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ team on the ‘challenge’ and ‘fun’ of creating a new Penny and Bernadette
Chuck Lorre is revisiting the Big Bang Theory universe with a new project called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. The show follows the character Stuart, played by Kevin Sussman, as he navigates a sci-fi adventure through different dimensions after a multiverse-altering event created by Sheldon and Leonard.
While the series features familiar faces, Lorre notes that returning cast members are not playing their original iterations. Kaley Cuoco and Melissa Rauch are slated to appear as entirely new versions of Penny and Bernadette. According to Lorre, this shift allows the actors to move beyond their previous roles and create something fresh within this genre.
Kevin Sussman admits he was initially skeptical about the reality of the project. He notes that the production stands apart from the multi-camera sitcom format of the original series. This change provides freedom to explore the sci-fi comedy direction without the pressure of matching the established tone of the predecessor.
The show continues to pull in cameos from the original cast, with Kunal Nayyar already featured in the premiere episode. The creative team views the inclusion of these multiverse variants as both a narrative hurdle and a unique opportunity for performance. Audiences can expect more surprises as the characters continue their trek across the cosmos.
