Fit Check: Cornelius Resident Shines at CrossFit Games
Angela Yates of Cornelius has secured an eighth-place finish in the 60-64 women’s division at the annual CrossFit Games. The competition took place in San Jose, California, where athletes were tested across seven specific events measuring strength, endurance, and overall physical performance. Over three days, the events demanded proficiency in weightlifting, running, and bodyweight movements.
Yates, who is a local Keller Williams Realtor, managed top-10 finishes in four of the seven events. Her strongest showing was a third-place finish in a workout focused on thrusters and burpees. Despite the intensity of these movements, Yates maintained a high pace throughout the competition. She has been training in this discipline for 15 years and consistently trained twice a day to prepare for the final stage of the season.
The qualification process for the CrossFit Masters is rigorous, starting with a worldwide Open and moving through quarterfinal and semifinal stages. Yates earned her spot by performing well in Alabama and taking first place in the Orlando semifinals. Her success in San Jose places her as the eighth-ranked athlete in her age group globally.
Support from her local community at CrossFit Cornelius played a role in her preparation. Yates noted that her fellow gym members provided encouragement that helped her maintain focus during the event. She was accompanied to the Games by her coach and husband, both of whom are named Robert Yates.
