A new study published in The Lancet Public Health challenges the common belief that all physical activity is beneficial for brain health. Researchers have identified a phenomenon known as the physical activity paradox, which differentiates between movement performed during leisure time and movement required by one's job.

While activities like running, swimming, or sports during downtime are linked to a 24 percent lower risk of dementia, the findings show a different trend for occupational activity. People who perform physically demanding work face a 20 percent higher risk of dementia. The analysis included 4.2 million participants between the ages of 45 and 93 across 30 countries.

Experts suggest that the environments associated with jobs requiring high levels of physical labor may contribute to these risks. Factors such as exposure to air pollution, high stress, and repetitive, taxing physical motions are likely culprits. These job-related demands may also lead to exhaustion, which reduces the likelihood that individuals will engage in restorative leisure-time exercise outside of work hours.

This research represents a departure from the simple assumption that any form of movement is good for the brain. It highlights that the context of physical activity is just as important as the movement itself. Individuals should consider how their daily work environments affect their long-term health, as even high levels of physical exertion in a professional setting do not provide the same protective benefits as intentional, leisure-based exercise.
