Eli Lilly says it will file for approval of next-generation obesity drug in 2027 as it clears two more trials
Eli Lilly plans to submit its next-generation obesity medication, retatrutide, for regulatory approval in the first quarter of 2027. This decision follows successful results from two additional late-stage clinical trials. The company stated that the extra time is necessary to finalize manufacturing and quality data for regulators.
In these recent trials, the weekly injection demonstrated significant weight loss and blood sugar management in adults living with obesity who also have Type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Participants in one study achieved weight loss of up to 20.8 percent over 80 weeks, while those in another group reached up to 22.6 percent.
Retatrutide functions as a triple-action hormone agonist. It targets GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors, which distinguishes it from existing weight-loss treatments. The company views this drug as a key component of its long-term portfolio alongside Zepbound and its new pill, Foundayo.
Regulatory submissions remain a central part of the company strategy to maintain its competitive position against other pharmaceutical leaders in the weight-loss sector. Analysts anticipate strong market performance for this treatment as the pharmaceutical firm works to address chronic conditions through its metabolic health division.
