After a seven-year struggle with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Simo is launching ChronicleBio to address chronic conditions that remain largely ignored by traditional medical research. The company operates on a clear thesis: current clinical trials for complex syndromes often fail because they group patients with different biological drivers under a single, generic diagnosis.
ChronicleBio seeks to change this by using artificial intelligence to analyze massive datasets extracted from human biological samples. To date, the company has collected blood samples from over 700 patients, building a biobank of 3,500 vials. By processing 153 terabytes of data, the startup aims to identify distinct sub-diseases within broader chronic conditions. This allows researchers to test targeted drug therapies on specific patient subgroups rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores biological nuance.
Starting August 11, the company is expanding its reach by deploying mobile phlebotomy trucks to patients' homes across the United States. This effort aims to include those who are bedridden or otherwise unable to travel to clinics. The program offers the first 250 participants free in-depth health reports, providing them with granular information about their condition while contributing valuable data to the collective pool.
Simo notes that chronic diseases like POTS and chronic fatigue syndrome disproportionately affect women and are historically underfunded. By combining modern computing power with consistent biological data, she believes the medical industry can finally map the complex interactions between the nervous system, immune response, and genetics. ChronicleBio intends to partner with pharmaceutical firms to develop new therapeutic pathways once the underlying biological drivers of these specific sub-diseases are clearly defined.
The venture reflects a shift in how AI is applied to real-world outcomes. While the technology has demonstrated high performance in language tasks, Simo views the discovery of cures as the ultimate goal for the sector. By securing $15 million in funding and maintaining ongoing advisory roles at major tech firms, the startup is positioning itself to bridge the gap between computational research and clinical practice for populations that have spent years without viable medical options.
