An Indianapolis mental health facility has agreed to pay a $2,500 fine after violating city ordinance by transporting two unhoused individuals to Fort Wayne. The hospital sent these patients to The Rescue Mission without obtaining the required prior consent from the facility.
This incident follows a series of warnings issued by the City of Fort Wayne. In May and June, city attorneys sent letters to various facilities regarding the practice of transferring homeless patients into the city without coordination or approval. This enforcement action stems from a local law passed in March intended to regulate these patient transfers.
While this facility chose to settle the matter out of court, it highlights a tension between regional service providers and municipal policies. The citations originally issued were dismissed as part of the settlement agreement reached on Wednesday.
A second Indianapolis-based addiction treatment center was also investigated for similar actions. However, city officials confirmed that this second facility avoided fines after they provided documentation that satisfied the legal department's requirements for patient transfers.
The City of Fort Wayne continues to monitor these transfers to ensure compliance with existing regulations. The Rescue Mission remains a central point for these discussions as the city works to balance regional healthcare needs with local ordinances.
