The research, which analyzed data from 7,308 individuals, compared the effects of these newer medications against warfarin and non-treatment groups.
Participants who received NOACs showed a slightly slower decrease in their scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination. While the observed difference was modest per year, the trend remained consistent over a longer follow-up period. The investigators suggest that by potentially reducing small-scale blood vessel damage and improving brain circulation, these medications might provide a secondary benefit beyond their primary purpose of stroke prevention.
Medical experts emphasize that these findings are based on observational data rather than a controlled clinical trial. This means the study cannot definitively prove that the drugs cause the slower decline. Factors such as patient frailty or existing health conditions could also influence the results. However, the data highlights that NOACs appear to offer a safer balance regarding bleeding risks compared to older treatments like warfarin.

Choosing the right blood thinner involves weighing multiple factors, including stroke risk, the likelihood of falls, and the ease of medication administration.
