Clinical trials showed that the drug reduces LDL cholesterol by 56% to 59% relative to placebo, placing its efficacy on par with existing injectable options. Experts note that while the effectiveness is clear, the real-world impact depends on how well patients adhere to the daily regimen.
Cardiologists expect this pill to play a significant role in primary care settings. Currently, a high percentage of primary care physicians do not prescribe injectable PCSK9 inhibitors. By removing the need for injections and offering a lower price point than existing alternatives, this oral medication could increase the number of patients who reach their cholesterol goals. The drug is priced at 315 dollars for a 30-day supply.
Patients must take the tablet on an empty stomach and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything besides other medications. Because of these specific instructions, clinical education is a priority. While the medication represents a major breakthrough, medical professionals are monitoring long-term adherence. Statins often see high drop-off rates, and there is concern that a daily pill might face similar challenges compared to infrequent injections.
