The United Kingdom has become the first nation in Europe to approve Foundayo, a new daily pill for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Developed by Eli Lilly, the medication functions as a GLP-1 receptor agonist to suppress appetite. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency confirmed the authorization this week.

While the drug is now available for private prescription, its status within the NHS remains pending. Eli Lilly is currently preparing an application for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to evaluate its use for weight loss treatment across the public health system. It is already cleared for type 2 diabetes patients.

Medical experts highlight several practical benefits for patients. The pill format offers an alternative to the currently available injection-based weight loss treatments. Clinicians also note that Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, unlike other existing tablet options that require specific fasting conditions. Researchers suggest this flexibility may encourage better adherence to treatment plans.

Clinical trials indicate that Foundayo is effective in preventing weight regain for individuals who have already completed a cycle of weight loss injections. Dr. Simon Cork of Anglia Ruskin University noted that while the primary weight loss outcomes are lower than some injectable counterparts, the medication provides clinically meaningful results. Furthermore, industry analysts anticipate that this oral version may carry a lower cost profile than injectable analogs.

Patients should remain aware of potential side effects, which include common gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and constipation. As with all medical interventions for weight management, professionals continue to emphasize that medication serves as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, a balanced diet and regular exercise.
