Arrival of Foundayo in UK Pharmacies
Starting Monday, UK pharmacies will stock Foundayo, a once-daily weight loss pill designed to manage blood sugar and aid in weight reduction. This rollout marks a shift in how patients access treatment. Many individuals who have struggled with weight loss jabs or simply prefer oral medication now have a direct pathway to professional support. Eli Lilly manufactures this new drug, which received authorization from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency earlier this month.
The United Kingdom holds the distinction of being the first European country to clear this specific medication for use. While injectable GLP-1 treatments have dominated the market since the launch of Wegovy in July, healthcare providers believe this oral option serves a clear clinical need. The medication is explicitly licensed for people with a body mass index of 30 or higher. Individuals with a BMI between 27 and 30 who suffer from at least one weight-related condition also qualify for treatment.
Clinical Guidelines and Usage
Patients taking Foundayo start with a dosage of 0.8mg. This medication follows a specific ramp-up schedule, with the dosage increasing to 2.5mg, 5.5mg, 9mg, 14.5mg, and finally 17.2mg. Patients are required to spend at least one month at each level before moving to a higher dose. The daily pill is flexible, as it requires no specific food or water restrictions, simplifying the routine for those managing type 2 diabetes or weight-related health challenges.
Khalil Asmar, the vice-president of cardiometabolic health at Lilly Northern Europe, confirmed the company is currently working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. This collaboration focuses on assessing the pill for potential integration into the NHS service in England. Until such a decision occurs, patients will primarily access the drug through private channels at retail pharmacies.
Future Implications for Patient Care
Henry Gregg, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, described the launch as a significant development. He noted that oral medications allow treatment access for a wider group of people who cannot use injectables. However, he also highlighted the risks associated with the black market. Criminal groups often produce counterfeit versions of oral drugs, which can pose severe safety risks. Patients should rely exclusively on regulated pharmacy channels to obtain their prescriptions.
Government and health authorities now face pressure to improve access. Disparities in local weight management services—often referred to as a postcode lottery—remain a concern for advocates. The introduction of Foundayo into the pharmacy network could provide a template for streamlining patient care across the country. As the drug becomes more widely available, health experts will watch to see if it reduces the strain on GPs and helps normalize weight management options for eligible patients nationwide.
