A new study indicates that GLP-1 medications could move toward a more personalized model rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Researchers from institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, and UT Southwestern analyzed data from 13,000 participants to see how different drugs impact specific health metrics.
The study, published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, used a framework called the Cardiometabolic Efficacy Index to measure effectiveness. This index tracks factors like blood pressure, waist circumference, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. While weight loss remains a primary outcome, the data shows that different treatments provide varying benefits for heart and metabolic health.
For example, while higher-dosage injections like semaglutide showed strong performance in weight reduction and cholesterol management, other options like orforglipron demonstrated superior results for blood sugar control and systolic blood pressure. This suggests that doctors may soon have more data to choose the specific medication that aligns with a patient’s unique health goals.
Experts note that these findings encourage a shift toward tailored treatment plans. By understanding the distinct strengths of each drug, clinicians can better support patients based on their specific physical needs rather than relying solely on general weight-loss indicators. As testing continues for new drugs that could potentially be administered monthly, the goal is to refine how these therapies address chronic conditions.
