The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan has developed a new non-invasive device for managing generalized anxiety disorder. This technology stimulates the vagus nerve through the ear to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. By regulating brain areas like the brainstem and prefrontal cortex, the device aims to help patients manage emotional distress without relying solely on traditional medication.

Project manager Hu Chang-lin notes that many people struggle with anxiety but avoid medical treatment. Research indicates that a large portion of the population faces significant stress while only a small percentage receives formal mental health support through the National Health Insurance system. Current reliance on medication often leads to side effects or physical dependence, which motivates the need for accessible alternatives.

The ITRI platform distinguishes itself by integrating real-time physiological data analysis. The device measures heart rate variability and photoplethysmography, uploading these metrics to the cloud for professional review. This feedback loop allows doctors to monitor patient data remotely, ensuring more accurate adjustments to therapy before clinic visits occur.

Clinical trials are the next step for this technology. The organization expects the review process for these trials to span approximately 1.5 years. ITRI aims to bring the device to market within three to five years, focusing on a price point that supports home-based care. By offering a digital therapeutic option that supplements traditional psychotherapy and medicine, the institute intends to broaden access to mental health tools across the region.
