Researchers at the University Health Network in Toronto are launching a new clinical trial to address a frequent challenge for those living with Parkinson’s disease. The study, known as PSI-PARK, investigates whether psilocybin can serve as a safe and effective treatment for depression in patients diagnosed with this neurodegenerative condition.

Depression affects many individuals with Parkinson’s, yet these patients are frequently excluded from broader psychedelic research due to perceived safety risks. Standard antidepressants often provide limited relief for this specific group. The PSI-PARK trial aims to bridge this data gap by testing various dosages of a naturally derived psilocybin drug candidate, PEX010, which was produced by Filament Health Corp.

This initiative follows a 2025 pilot study that yielded positive preliminary results. In that earlier effort, participants reported sustained improvements in both anxiety and depression symptoms following treatment, with researchers observing no adverse side effects. By moving from pilot data to a formalized, randomized clinical trial, the team led by Dr. Joshua Rosenblat seeks to determine if these findings hold up in a controlled clinical environment.

As interest grows in the medical application of psychedelics, similar research efforts are currently emerging in the United States and the United Kingdom. If successful, this work may offer a new path for managing mood dysfunction in neurodegenerative patients, providing relief where current pharmacological options fall short. The trial marks a shift in how medical experts approach the intersection of psychedelic therapy and chronic illness.
