LISTEN | How childhood gambling habit destroyed one man’s life
Raymond Phillips spent 32 years trapped in a cycle of gambling addiction. His situation started at age 13 in a local shop, where he played illegal slot machines while waiting to play arcade games. This early exposure grew into a lifelong habit that eventually cost him his marriage, his career, and more than R1 million in savings.
After a traumatic robbery in 2015, Phillips turned to online gambling. The accessibility of betting on his mobile phone made his addiction harder to control. He hid the truth from his family and eventually misused funds belonging to his colleagues, which led to significant personal and professional ruin. The financial consequences were severe, as he squandered his own pension and a substantial injury settlement.
Today, at 45, Phillips is unemployed and actively rebuilding his life following a rehabilitation program. He shares his story to warn others about the dangers of gambling, particularly how easily it can start with minor games in childhood. He emphasizes that he could not overcome this issue alone and credit professional counseling for his recovery.
He currently volunteers to educate others on the reality of addiction. His goal is to reach those who are currently suffering in silence, as he once did. His experience highlights the urgent need for better protection for minors against illegal gambling machines found in neighborhood shops.
