Fathers who eat more processed foods may influence their baby's weight
A new study from the University of São Paulo highlights that a father's diet before conception has a measurable impact on his newborn child. Researchers observed 43 families and found that fathers who consume high amounts of ultra-processed foods are more likely to have babies with higher birth weights and increased fat accumulation in areas like the thighs and lower back.
While maternal nutrition is a primary focus in most prenatal care, this research indicates that paternal health plays an equally significant role. The team suggests that ultra-processed foods can create a pro-inflammatory environment that affects sperm quality. This process potentially alters the expression of specific genes, such as IGF-II, which is inherited from the father and regulates fetal growth.
Interestingly, the study found that mothers and fathers experience different results from the same dietary habits. While high intake of processed foods in fathers often links to higher birth weights, maternal consumption of those same nutrient-poor items tends to result in lower birth weights, likely due to impacts on early placental development. These findings highlight why both parents should consider their nutritional intake well before conception.
Birth weight remains a critical predictor of long-term health, including the risk of developing cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes later in life. Although the sample size remains small, this research offers new insight into how paternal lifestyle choices contribute to fetal development. The authors suggest that public health guidelines for family planning should include more specific dietary advice for men, moving beyond the current focus on maternal health alone.
