Kids in North Jersey cooking contest chop their way to healthy eating
Children at the Boys and Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic traded processed snacks for fresh ingredients during a hands-on cooking competition this week. Participants prepared meals from scratch, including guacamole and grilled chicken wraps, to learn how to turn fresh items into nutritious dishes they can recreate at home. The event highlighted the importance of culinary education for youth.
Stop and Shop supported the program by donating 50,000 dollars to the club. These funds sustain the Snack Shack initiative, which provides food and nutrition lessons to over 1,000 children. Community relations manager Daniel Wolk noted that the goal is to provide both the physical resources and the knowledge required to maintain a healthy diet, particularly as many families struggle with rising food costs.
Nutrition experts emphasize that access to food must go hand in hand with education to build lasting habits. Tina McGeough, a dietitian, explained that food insecurity creates significant barriers for children in high-poverty areas, affecting their academic performance and daily well-being. By teaching kids to prepare affordable, healthy meals, the club helps mitigate some of these financial pressures.
Celebrity chef Leia Gaccione served as a judge for the competition and praised the enthusiasm of the participants. She identified cooking as a primary life skill that allows children to nurture their own health. The organizers remain focused on the broader impact of the program, ensuring that students walk away with increased confidence in the kitchen and an understanding of how to make positive choices for their long-term health.
