The study found that reducing protein intake improves metabolic function by shrinking fatty tissue, enhancing energy expenditure, and stabilizing blood sugar levels. A protective hormone called FGF21 increases when protein is restricted, helping the body burn energy more effectively.
Additionally, lowering protein intake encourages a process called autophagy, where the body removes damaged proteins and cellular waste. This internal cleanup cycle is linked to better health as individuals age. The study emphasizes that these findings challenge the common assumption that more protein is always better for the average person.
Researchers clarify that a low-protein diet is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those recovering from significant injuries require adequate protein for development and healing. Official guidelines from the World Health Organization and the European Food Safety Authority set the baseline intake at 0.83 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.
Personalization of nutrition is the next step for clinical researchers. Rather than adhering to blanket high-protein recommendations, individuals should adjust their consumption based on their physical activity levels, age, and personal health requirements.
