Underwater drones find Benin coral reef long presumed dead, and it's teeming with life
A coral reef off the coast of Benin, long thought to be dead, has been found thriving and full of marine life. Scientists discovered this hidden ecosystem using modern underwater drones and sonar technology to scan the seabed. The site, located over 164 feet below the surface, is a mesophotic coral habitat that supports at least eight species of fish and eight types of coral. This discovery confirms the first living mesophotic ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf.
The search began with archived records from the 1960s that suggested a deep-water reef existed in the area. Early researchers believed the formation was dead, but recent high-definition footage from a deep-sea camera system proved otherwise. The team identified fish species such as golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, and West African goatfish living among the coral patches. Lead author Gérard Zinzindohoué noted that the ability to clearly view the seafloor for the first time was a major milestone for the team.
This finding is significant for regional conservation. Healthy coral systems provide critical shelter and feeding grounds for marine life, which in turn benefits local fisheries and coastal communities. Much of West Africa's marine environment remains under-mapped, and this discovery reveals how much biodiversity might currently be overlooked in development and fishing policies. Documenting these areas is essential for effective environmental management and protecting natural resources.
The research is far from over. Current data suggests the reef system may extend up to 25 miles parallel to the coast, though only a small fraction has been surveyed. Future phases of the project will include physical diving and sampling to confirm species identification and assess the overall health of the reef. This work aims to provide a clearer picture of how the ocean in this region has changed over the decades and what steps are necessary for long-term protection.
