This market pressure incentivizes the conversion of tropical forests and peatlands into plantations. Studies show a clear link between these biofuel mandates and the loss of critical ecosystems in regions like Indonesia and Malaysia, which threatens biodiversity while contributing to higher greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond climate and ecology, these mandates create upward pressure on global food prices. Redirecting food crops into fuel tanks competes with human nutritional needs, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.
