A recent study shows that climate change has doubled the probability of the extreme weather conditions currently fueling Canada’s massive wildfires. Scientists from World Weather Attribution analyzed the data and found that these blazes are no longer rare events but are becoming part of a regular cycle due to global heating from fossil fuel use.
Nearly 700 fires are burning across Canada today, consuming millions of hectares of boreal forest. Conditions that once occurred every 40 years are now expected every two to six years in the Northwest Territories and every six to 15 years in Ontario. This shift indicates a fundamental change in the intensity and scale of fire seasons that experts say will continue without a transition away from fossil fuels.
The research highlights that extreme fire weather is a direct consequence of rising global temperatures. Despite the scientific consensus, political figures continue to debate the cause of these events. Experts warn that current disaster preparedness measures remain insufficient against the changing reality of the environment.
