A Summer of Record Ozone Pollution
Colorado’s Front Range endured one of its worst air quality seasons on record during the summer of 2026. Data shows more than 60 days where ozone levels climbed into dangerous territory between June and September. This total marks a significant spike compared to the 24 days recorded during the same period in 2025. While meteorological summer has concluded, the ozone season remains active through the end of September, meaning final tallies may shift.
Mike Silverstein, executive director of the Regional Air Quality Council, described the conditions as some of the worst in recent memory. He noted that while wildfire smoke played a part, the primary drivers for these spikes were vehicle exhaust and emissions from regional oil and gas operations. Denver’s geography exacerbates the problem. The city sits on plains located below mountain ranges, a position that traps chemical pollutants. High heat combined with intense summer sunlight then triggers a reaction that converts these pollutants into ground-level ozone.
The Geographic Reach of Contamination
The Denver Metro area and the northern Front Range rank among the areas with the highest ozone pollution in the United States. Surprisingly, the most severe readings often occur outside of dense urban centers. Advocacy groups pointed to specific locations like Chatfield State Park, the town of Evergreen, and the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge as hotspots for poor air quality. These areas often experience higher pollution concentrations than the heart of the city, complicating efforts to track and manage regional exposure.
State officials have enacted a series of regulations over the last 14 years to address this consistent failure to meet federal health standards. These measures include strict leak detection requirements for oil and gas sites and restrictions on high-polluting vehicles. Colorado even implemented laws aimed at curbing the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment. Despite these interventions, the region remains out of compliance, prompting the Regional Air Quality Council to release a new draft blueprint in September 2026 designed to guide future policy decisions and federal compliance.
Health Impacts and Economic Costs
Public health experts warn that the recent trend toward cleaner air has stalled. Current estimates suggest that more than 81% of Colorado residents now live in communities with unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution. This exposure contributes to increased rates of heart disease and respiratory distress. Meah Freisinger, a 17-year-old student athlete, shared that her asthma forced her to avoid outdoor activities for long stretches of the summer. She had to miss soccer practices and hiking trips because the air quality made normal activity dangerous.
A study released in July by the Colorado School of Public Health quantified the economic burden of this pollution. Researchers modeled the health costs associated with ozone concentrations across the region, factoring in emergency room visits, hospital admissions for respiratory illness, and lost work days. The data shows that meeting federal clean air standards could save the region between $211 million and $580 million in health costs every year. Conversely, a significant increase in current ozone levels could impose an economic cost exceeding $1.9 billion annually.
Next Steps for State Policy
The Regional Air Quality Council intends to use these findings to push for additional regulatory action. The board has presented the health impact study to the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission. These figures will likely influence upcoming hearings regarding rules for oil refineries, commercial lawn equipment, and updated emission standards for the energy sector. Advocates from organizations like the Colorado Public Interest Research Group argue that the state must also increase support for electric vehicle incentives. As the region moves toward the 2032 federal deadline for meeting the 70 parts per billion ozone standard, the pressure on policymakers to enact substantial changes continues to grow.
