A new housing project is breaking ground near Lawrence, Kansas, that challenges conventional construction. Designed by architect Michael E. Reynolds, this structure functions as an Earthship—an independent, self-sustaining residence that produces its own electricity and water while managing its own waste.
The project specifically addresses the environmental realities of the Midwest by incorporating ferro-cement vaults. These structural elements are engineered to withstand fire and high-velocity winds, providing a level of protection against the tornadoes common in the region. The design centers on six principles of off-grid living: thermal mass for climate control, solar and wind power, rainwater harvesting, integrated food production, and internal sewage treatment.
Construction starts this September, with a team of 25 students working alongside the Earthship Biotecture crew. The build process prioritizes resourcefulness by incorporating repurposed materials sourced from the surrounding area. The design includes 1,000 recycled tires, 16,000 aluminum cans, and 1,000 cardboard boxes to form the structural foundations of the residence.
This approach to building offers a model for domestic security in volatile climates. By treating basic human needs as self-contained systems, the project moves away from utility dependence. As the first of its kind in this specific region, the Kansas Earthship serves as a practical test for extreme weather resilience in residential design.
