El Niño occurs when ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific stay warmer than average. This heat moves into the atmosphere and shifts weather patterns across the globe. Potential outcomes include drought in parts of Australia and Indonesia alongside increased flooding across various regions of South America.
NOAA researchers use the Relative Oceanic Niño Index to track these events, especially given the rising baseline temperatures of the global ocean. This current event is expected to surpass the 1982 to 1983 cycle in intensity. Forecasters expect sea surface temperature anomalies in the central Pacific to climb more than 2.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average.
While previous cycles provide some data, this event carries unique risks because it occurs against a backdrop of higher global temperatures than in the past. This combination increases the likelihood of extreme heat waves and specific weather shifts in the United States. Forecasters anticipate wetter conditions across the southern tier of the country, stretching from California to Florida, while the Midwest may experience drier and milder winter weather.
